The Shaw special at Rajkot

Prithvi Shaw stole all the limelight on day one of the first Test between India and West Indies. The opener made his Test debut through this game and inked his name in the history by slamming a 99-ball hundred. During his spectacular show of some dazzling strokes the right-hand batsman broke several records as well.

Shaw becomes the second youngest Indian to open the innings

At 18 years and 329 days, Prithvi Shaw became the second youngest Indian batsman to open the innings. The record belongs to Vijay Mehra who opened India’s innings at the age of 17 years and 265 days in 1955.

It wasn’t just about the runs he scored, the pace at which Shaw got his runs was impressive as well. His 56-ball half-century is the second quickest by an Indian on Test debut.

The India opener converted his fifty into a hundred and that too without slowing down his gears. He brought his hundred in just 99 balls which is a record in itself. This is the third fastest century on debut in Test cricket and the fastest by an opener.

The only Indian teenager to score a century on debut

Shaw is also the second youngest Indian batsman to score a century. He is behind the run-machine Sachin Tendulkar. The right-hand batsman is also the youngest Indian to score a century on debut. Infact he is the only teenager from India to slam a hundred on his debut.

The 18-year-old batsman is also the first player to hit hundreds on his Ranji, Duleep trophy and Test match debut. Interestingly Shaw made his Ranji debut on the same ground.

Shaw also has the rare achievement of scoring a quintuple hundred in cricket career and featuring in Test cricket. Only two players achieved this feat before him and it includes the great Brian Lara and Charles Eady.
