Sri Lanka star cricketer ruled out of England series

After losing the first Test against England, Sri Lanka has received a big blow ahead of the second Test as skipper Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out of the remaining Test series due to injury. The middle-order batsman is yet to recover from the groin injury he suffered in the first Test and hence won’t participate in the second and third Test.

 

Chandimal yet to recover from injury 

The Sri Lanka captain got injured during the first Test against England. He suffered injuries to his groin which raised doubts over his participation in the remaining series.

However, today Sri Lanka cricket management officially announced that the right-hand batsman will take at least two more days to recover and hence won’t feature in the remaining series against England.

Meanwhile, Charith Asalanka has been included in the team as the cover for Chandimal. Asalanka is yet to play Test cricket and has experience fo 29 first-class matches behind him.

He has represented the Sri Lanka under-19 team and has scored 1185 first-class runs at an average of 26.93.

 

Suranga Lakmal to lead the hosts 

In the absence of Chandimal, pace bowler Suranga Lakmal will lead the hosts in the remaining two Tests. Lakmal has previously donned the hat of captain and now will have to shoulder the responsibility of leading the Sri Lanka team.

 

What happened in the first Test

Contrary to what was expected, England dominated Sri Lanka in the first Test and registered a thumping 211-run win. The visitors piled up 342 runs in the first innings and restricted Sri Lanka to a mere 203 runs.

In the second innings, courtesy of Keaton Jennings’ 146 runs, England amassed 322 runs and then routed the hosts for just 25o runs.

The two sides will now meet on November 14th for the second Test while the third Test will be played on 23rd November.
