Controversies of Indian Cricket

4) IPL Match fixing scandal

The IPL has also added to the controversies of indian cricket. The ghosts of the match fixing scandal of 2000 revisited Indian cricket after the IPL scandal of 2012 and 2013. Through sting operations and police reports, it was evident that there were many players who had accepted bribe for spot fixing.

Earlier it lead to the banning of players like Shalabh Shrivastava and TP Sudhindra but later the arrest of players such as Ankeet Chavan and S Sreesanth in the IPL scandal. Sreesanth at that time was a double world cup winner with India and a regular in the Indian side.

The scandal had political implications too as N Srinivasan and Rajiv Shukla had to step down from their posts after the former’s son in law was arrested in the betting scandal.

The cascading effects saw the two most important franchises of the IPL suspended for a couple of years when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were not a part of the IPL for the 2016 and 2017 season. This has massively damaged the reputation of the IPL with the rumors of spot fixing lingering on to the IPL throughout its tenure
