The young 17-year old wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel came into the Indian side when India was in a dire need of a wicketkeeper-batsman in the early 2000s. Though he was a class apart with gloves behind the stumps he failed to score runs consistently or at the rate at which the team would’ve wanted him to. However, with the rise of Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman was left out of the squad. As soon as Dhoni sealed his spot in the Indian team, Parthiv then was seen only as a replacement player. Even after the former skipper’s retirement in 2014 as he was seen as second-choice keeper once again.

He last played for Indian in 2018 against South Africa and then later announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in 2020 but his name also stands on the list of players who should have had a long career. Overall in 65 matches across the formats, the southpaw has massed 1706 runs. However, he was the mainstay for Gujarat in the Ranji trophy and his knock of 93 runs in 2020 against Saurashtra was the main highlight which gave his team hope to qualify for the finals but that couldn’t happen as they lost the match.
