Gavaskar retorts Shastri over his remark

Just a day after Ravi Shastri hailed the current team as the best touring team in the last 15-20 years, former legendary player Sunil Gavaskar reminded Indian team head coach that most of the wins of current Indian squad have not come in England or in South Africa but in Sri Lanka.

While talking to the media in a match conference, Ravi Shastri had said that he didn’t remember any other Indian team in last 15-20 years had had the same run in such a short time and they had some great players playing in the series.

Retorting Shastri over his remark, Gavaskar said that the previous Indian teams have won matches in England and West Indies in the 1980s.

He said that previous teams have won the series in West Indies, South Africa and England.

“I believe that not many previous captains and teams have won earlier in Sri Lanka, but they have won matches in the West Indies, England and South Africa in the last 15-20 years. I believe it was Shastri’s view and only he can speak about it. But what I can say is that teams in the 1980s have also won series.”

Sunil Gavaskar also said that Rahul Dravid gets very little credit for his team’s performance and his captaincy. Gavaskar said that India got its first victory over South Africa under his leadership, he also led India to a win over West Indies in 2005 and a series win in 2007 against England, yet he doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

“I will say that Sri Lanka are difficult to beat at home and I will definitely give the credit to the current team. India have won in England before but they have never won a series in Australia and South Africa,” he said.

Gavaskar backs Shaw’s inclusion

Gavaskar also backed Prithvi Shaw’s inclusion in the playing XI as an opener in the final Test. India will be taking on England for the final Test at Kennington Oval.
