India won their first T20I against Ireland in a comprehensive manner. They blasted Ireland bowlers for fun from ball one and Ishan Kishan paved the way for it by showing excellent intent straight away. He also breached the 500 run mark in T20 internationals in the game.
KL Rahul is one of the most consistent batsmen in T20Is in world cricket at the moment. There are no surprises that KL Rahul has taken the less number of innings to reach the 500 run mark in the T20 internationals by an Indian batsman. There is no denying the fact that, being an opener helps him in this case as he has the opportunity to face most number of balls in the innings, but his consistency is something that cannot be taken for granted.

Ishan Kishan, who has been integrated into the T20I setup in the recent past has been mighty impressive as well. He has taken just 16 innings to get to 500 runs in the T20Is so far. He is also seen as a potential backup opener for the world cup and he is doing no harm to his chances by playing some excellent and impactful knocks in the opportunities that he has got so far.
The southpaw is not only consistent but also scores at a brisk rate which the other current openers who are in contention for the opening spot lack including KL Rahul.
Ishan Kishan has been primarily seen as an opener which is the right thing to do as he likes the powerplay cushion where he can maximize the fielding restrictions and also can go into the middle overs having faced good amount of balls which it makes him even more lethal against spinners.
When India’s first choice openers, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, come back into the playing 11, Ishan Kishan will have to act as a backup opener. At the moment, he doesn’t have a space in the first choice Indian T20I XI.
