IPL Auction will take the centerstage as all the 10 franchises start their intense discussions for the 2023 edition of the T20 tournament. All the ten IPL teams have to submit the list of their retained and released players latest by 15 November, 2022 (Tuesday). It is also confirmed that a mini IPL auction for the 2023 edition of the competition will be taking place in December 2022 in Kochi.

When is IPL 2023 auction?

According to some relevant sources, the next Indian Premier League auction is very much likely to be held later this year in December in Kochi, Kerala. All the 10 IPL franchises will be planning hard for the event as the auction is always one of the key aspects in this cash-rich T20 league witnessed over the years.

Will IPL 2023 have a mega auction?

Much like last year, the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League won’t have a mega auction and this time, the teams will battle out for some of the key players in a mini-IPL auction. Even if this year there won’t be a mega auction, many of the star players will be up for grabs who have done very well recently in T20 cricket including the likes of Cameron Green, Rilee Rossouw, Alex Hales, Sam Curran and many others.

What are IPL 2023 Auction rules?

There are no major guidelines announced by the IPL committee for the retention process, however, all the 10 participating teams will start with a purse of INR 5 crore, with last year’s remaining sum of each team adding up to the initial sum. Every team can retain a maximum of 15 players in their squad and release a maximum of 10 players for the mini-auction. The deadline for submitting the final list of released and retained players is 15 November, 2022.

Where is the IPL 2023 Venue?

The 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League is very much likely to take place in India, however, the final confirmation is still awaited. IPL 2023 is once again expected to go back to the original formula where the teams had the luxury of the playing as many as 7 matches at their home ground. But the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be announcing the IPL 2023 venues later this year.

What are the Likely IPL Retentions?

The 10 IPL teams and their management will be busy making some strategies and plans for the upcoming season of the biggest T20 tournament. According to some reports, both Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have already submitted their list of players retained and released to the BCCI. It will be interesting to see the plans of the two newly added teams, defending champions Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants who will be playing their second edition of the IPL.

1. Gujarat Titans Retained players

The IPL 2022 champions, Gujarat Titans, will surely be eyeing to make the best of planning for their title defence.  After having won the title in his debut captaincy stint, Hardik Pandya will obviously be their first retention while the likes of Rashid Khan, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tewatia and David Miller will be their other big retentions. In a recent update, the Gujarat Titans have already traded fast bowler Lockie Ferguson and opening batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

2. Rajasthan Royals Retained players

Rajasthan Royals (RR) who finished as the runners-up during the last edition of the IPL, will be looking forward to retain their key match-winning players ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction. The likes of skipper Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna were amongst their top performers during the last edition of the competition.

3. Mumbai Indians Retained players

After a horrible campaign last year where the five-time champions finished with the wooden spoon, the Mumbai Indians will be hoping for some massive improve this time around. It is very expected that star MI all-rounder Kieron Pollard will be released ahead of the mini-auction. However, captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrah and youngsters like Tilak Verma are very much likely to be retained.

4. Chennai Super Kings Retained players

Even after not having the best of campaigns in the previous IPL edition, the Chennai Super Kings have already announced that MS Dhoni will lead the side in IPL 2023. On the other hand, players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Chahar, Moeen Ali will be their topmost retentions. It will be really interesting to see whether star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja who captained the side in the first half of IPL 2022 will be part of the retention list or not.

5. Royal Challengers Bangalore Retained players

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) management will once again be aiming to bring home their maiden IPL title this year starting with some key decisions in the mini-auction. After having finished third last season, skipper Faf du Plessis will definitely be retained alongside the likes of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Rajat Patidar, Josh Hazlewood and many others. RCB has already traded left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff with Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL mini-auction.

6. Kolkata Knight Riders Retained players

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are one of those teams who will have to make some tough decisions before this year’s IPL auction. However, Kolkata Knight Riders will be expected to back their senior duo of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine alongside captain Shreyas Iyer. There other big retentions will be Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakravarthy.

7. Lucknow Super Giants Retained players

In their debut IPL edition last year, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will surely be hoping to retain their key players who have done well for them. The likes of skipper KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohsin Khan are very much likely to be part of the retained players list. There are also reports that suggest star all-rounder Jason Holder might be released.

8. Sunrisers Hyderabad Retained players

After a rather miserable IPL campaign last season, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team management is very much likely to take some strong calls. If sources are to be believed the skipper Kane Williamson might be released ahead of the IPL 2023 auction as the Kiwi captain failed to contribute much with the bat during the previous edition of the competition. Sunrisers Hyderabad are expected to retain youngsters like Umran Malik, Abdul Samad, Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi and many others.

9. Punjab Kings Retained players

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) team management has already taken a big call as they have replaced Mayank Agarwal and appointed senior opener Shikhar Dhawan as their captain for the upcoming IPL 2023 season. It will now be interesting to see whether they will retain Agarwal or not. On the other hand, the likes of Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Liam Livingstone and Arshdeep Singh will be their topmost retentions this year.

10. Delhi Capitals Retained players

The Delhi Capitals failed to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2022 but they are still expected to settle with mostly the same set of players with Rishabh Pant as the captain. The likes of Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, Anrich Nortje and Axar Patel will be the top names in the retention list. On the other hand, reports also suggest that Shardul Thakur, Tim Seifert and Mandeep Singh might be released ahead of the mini auction.
