Rishabh Pant had a dream start to his Test career. After hammering a six on his very second ball in Test cricket, the 20-year old grabbed seven catches behind the stumps to broke a national record.

Courtesy of this sterling show, the youngster is receiving praises from the cricket fraternity and the latest one comes from Farok Engineer, one of India’s best wicket-keepers.

Speaking to a newspaper, Engineer said that he is very impressed and noted that Pant has tremendous reflexes. He also explained Pant’s mindset behind the six which he smacked against Adil Rashid by stepping down the track. Engineer said that Pant wanted to get off the mark quickly and he has guts and confidence. So that is the shot he plays.

The former Indian wicket-keeper stated that he loves to see youngsters make a mark. On this occasion he recollected memories of his own debut and said that he hit the first three balls because of sheer nervousness. Incidentally, Engineer also made his debut against England in 1961 at Kanpur.

Engineer featured in 46 Tests and scored 2611 runs at an average of 31.08. In the same duration he grabbed 66 catches while donning the wicket-keeping gloves and inflicted 16 stumpings. His precision in glovework is reflected in the fact that he was the wicket-keeper for the Rest of the World XI in the 1970’s.

The Indian cricketer was full of praise for Pant but he made some suggestions. He said that a wicket-keeper should stay as low as possible so that he can move quickly. He also added that a wicket-keeper needs to turn half-chances into catches.

Pant made his Test debut after an impressive show in the under-19 world cup, IPL and in first-class cricket. The young wicket-keeper was lauded by other former cricketers as well on twitter.

Courtesy of this amazing performance, the expectations are surely raised for Pant. Hence, it will be interesting to see how he performs in the next Test which will begin from August 30.
