SA vs IND Stats: South Africa will host India for a three-match grueling Test series, which starts from December 26. The Proteas have not kickstarted their WTC 2021-23 campaign so far, and their first assignment will be against the number one ranked side in Test cricket, India. For India, it will be a huge opportunity to claim their maiden Test series victory in South Africa.
India have already played two series as part of their WTC 2021-23 schedule. Although, the final 5th Test against England is yet to be played, India have established a 2-1 lead, which means that they will atleast avoid a series defeat in England for the first time since 2007. India defeated New Zealand in a two-match Test series at home, winning the second Test and clinching the series, 1-0.
South Africa and India started their Test rivalry in 1991/92 season, where India toured the Proteas for a four-match series. The hosts managed to win the series by the narrowest of margins, winning 1-0. In this particular battle, the side hosting the series has more or less emerged victorious. The only time the hosts lost a series was way back in 1999-2000 where South Africa defeated India on their home soil by a score-line of 2-0 in the two match Test series.
The two teams have played 39 Test matches against each other, with the score being pretty even. South Africa have managed to win 15 Tests, whereas, India have managed to win 14 Test matches. 10 of those fixtures have resulted in draws.

However, in the last five years, they have lost three home series, two against England and one against Sri Lanka. The Proteas were defeated 3-1 by England on both occasions. South Africa have secured the double over Australia in the last five years, defeating them both at home and away. Their last Test series was an away visit to West Indies, where South Africa managed to win the two-match Test series by a score-line of 2-0. The Proteas have managed six clean sweeps in the past five years.
India, ranked number one side in Test cricket have been unbeaten on their home soil. The major improvement in this Indian Test side is that under the leadership of Virat Kohli, they have went on to win series in SENA countries. They have pulled off two Test series victories in Australia in the last three years, and are just a match away from winning a Test series in England. India also reached the WTC 2019-2021 final, losing to New Zealand in the finals.
Labelled as the Freedom Trophy, the last five Tests between the two sides have been largely dominated by India. South Africa were whitewashed on their last visit to India in 2019. On their last tour to the Proteas in 2017/18, India lost the 3 match Test series, 2-1, but produced a splendid comeback to win the last Test.

Dean Elgar, captain of South Africa will play a key role, as he has the best record amongst the batters against India. One area where South Africa are one of the finest teams in world cricket is their pace bowling department. Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi form a lethal pace bowling troika. Duanne Olivier could also be considered for selection, after returning to the squad. Keshav Maharaj will be the lead spinner for the hosts.
The likes of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have stellar records against South Africa. Both average above 50 against the Proteas, and with Rohit Sharma ruled out of the Test series, the duo will have to step up big time. Mayank Agarwal scored a double hundred when South Africa toured India in 2019.
