South Africa has set the stage for the upcoming T20 World Cup with the revelation of their squad, led by Aiden Markram, for the tournament to be held in the West Indies and the USA. The squad features two uncapped players, batter Ryan Rickelton and pacer Ottniel Baartman, both of whom have showcased impressive performances in domestic cricket.

Rickelton, the leading run-scorer in the SA20 with 530 runs at an outstanding average of 58.88 for MI Cape Town, earns his maiden international call-up. Meanwhile, Baartman’s commendable performance, bagging 18 wickets in eight matches for two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape, secures him a spot in the squad.

However, the squad sees the exclusion of seasoned players such as Temba Bavuma, Rilee Rossouw, and Wayne Parnell, who featured in the previous T20 World Cup in 2022. Notable absentee Rassie van der Dussen, recovering from a broken finger, adds to the list of omissions. Furthermore, Lungi Ngidi, part of the 2022 squad, and Nandre Burger have been named as traveling reserves for the tournament.

The pace attack will be spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, who returns to international action after a nine-month hiatus. Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, and Baartman provide additional fast-bowling options. The spin department is led by Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, supported by Bjorn Fortuin, with Markram and Tristan Stubbs also offering spin options.

South Africa’s batting lineup boasts the likes of Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and Stubbs, alongside Markram and Rickelton.

Head coach Rob Walter expressed the difficulty in selecting the squad, given the impressive performances in recent T20 cricket. He congratulated the uncapped players while affirming confidence in the squad’s strength and potential for success in the tournament.

South Africa will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on June 3 in New York, followed by matches against the Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Nepal in Group D. Before the World Cup, they will engage in a three-match T20I series against West Indies, providing an opportunity for players not involved in the IPL to showcase their talent.

As anticipation builds for the T20 World Cup, South Africa’s squad promises a blend of experience and fresh talent, poised to compete fiercely on the global stage.
