Suryakumar Debut: India’s 66-run win in the first ODI against England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium came at a staggering cost. Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer, both picked up injuries.
Even England couldn’t keep themselves away from the misfortune as two of their stars, including captain fantastic Eoin Morgan, with the other being Sam Billings, suffered knocks, putting their involvement in what could be a series-defining game for the visitors, in huge doubt.
Injuries are part and parcels of sports. With hard work, an athlete can ramp up his fitness and avoid picking up knocks, but the body does give-in at times under extreme physical exertion with even some of the fittest athletes suffering career-threatening injuries.
Quite luckily, Shreyas Iyer‘s injury was not that serious. But the 26-year-old will be out for quite some now. As an old adage says, “Somebody’s Loss Is Somebody’s Gain.”
Iyer’s spot in India playing 11 is up for grabs and Suryakumar Yadav is reported to be a frontrunner to nail down the spot in IND vs ENG 2nd ODI.
Former Cricketers, and fans, were crying for Suryakumar Yadav‘s inclusion in Team India after his burst in the IPL with Mumbai Indians. The social media erupted into one giant volcano of unjust treatment and frustration when Yadav, having shone in IPL 2020, was overlooked for the Australian Tour.
The 30-year-old didn’t let the disappointment affect his game as he racked up impressive numbers once again in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The call for the Indian Team came eventually. Yadav was finally in the Indian team after getting picked up for the home series against England.
Like A Hot Knife Through Butter: Suryakuamr Yadav took the international game like a hot knife through butter. He was immense on his batting debut, which came in the IND vs ENG 4th T20I. Yadav clocked a half-century and helped India to an 8-wicket win for India.
Laxman Bats For Yadav’s Inclusion In India’s Team For World T20
Suryakumar Yadav ODI debut may be trending ahead of INDIA vs ENGLAND 2nd ODI, but former India cricketer VVS Laxman thinks that the 30-year-old deserved a shot at India’s squad for the T20 World Cup as well:
“Well, it’s a very tough question because what we have seen in this series is that lot of youngsters have capitalized on their opportunities. But the way Ishan Kishan played in his debut innings and then also the way Suryakumar Yadav played, I think both of them will definitely be in my squad of 15. It’s a tough choice, but I think both of them deserve to play in the Indian squad come the World Cup,” Laxman was quoted as saying on Star Sports show Cricket Connected.
Rohit Sharma should shake off the knock and make himself available for the IND vs ENG 2nd ODI, but Shreyas Iyer won’t be seen for quite a while now. While fielding, the Delhi Capitals captain dislocated his shoulder which will require surgery. The 26-year-old is set to spend time on the sideline.
