South Africa pulled off a thriller on Wednesday to take 1-0 lead in the 3-match T20I series against England with a 1-run win. Each of South Africa’s top three batters scored 30+ runs as they were cruising at 111/1 in the 11th over before the England bowlers pulled back things by restricting them to 177/8.

Jason Roy’s devastating 38-ball 70 included 10 boundaries as the required rate came below eight. When the home team began to put pressure, Eoin Morgan struck 52 off 34 balls before getting out in the penultimate over. Lungi Ngidi conceded only five runs in the last over when England needed 7 to win.

As it Happened

In the last ball of the English innings being bowled by Ngidi to Adil Rashid. It was a full ball from Ngidi but Rashid could only slog it towards mid-wicket and he also got run out by Quinton de Kock with the help of Steyn’s throw in his attempt of the second run. De Cock was as calm as cucumber, he kept his nerves low & whipped the bails to win the thriller by 1 run!

More about the match

At the innings break, there were two ways to look at 178 — the target South Africa set England in the first T20I at Buffalo Park. On one hand, it needed a record run-chase at the ground for England to win the game, and on the other, it roared praise for their genius at the death, where Chris Jordan and Mark Wood combined to concede only eight runs in the last two overs and effectively won their side the elusive yet non-quantifiable “momentum”.

Not that it mattered at this small ground, where wind often decided whether the ball will be caught in the deep or sail over for a six. England famously botched the run-chase, slipping from 132/2 after 14.2 overs to hand South Africa a one-run win, and a 1-0 series lead, in a thrilling last-ball finish.
