With the world’s premier T20 tournament less than three weeks away, almost all of the franchises involved have commenced preparations for the grand celebration of cricket that is the Indian Premier League. The eyes of the cricketing world shifted to the coastal capital of Tamil Nadu when the nation’s favorite son, MS Dhoni landed at the Chennai International Airport.
The ever so passionate fans of the Chennai Super Kings took to the roads of the great city, marking the homecoming of their captain. Other prominent India internationals – Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh were also given a grand welcome. Amongst the first to hit the training ground, the side from Chennai seems to have kickstarted the rehearsals for their IPL 2020 campaign with profound net sessions, intense fielding circuits, and absorbing practice matches.
As a matter of fact, it was during one such practice match when the fore-mentioned incident took place. The thousands of fans gathered at the Chepauk to watch their favorite cricketers were treated with a real sight to behold, with the almost romantic partnership of ‘Thala’ (Dhoni) and ‘Chinna Thala’ (Raina) once again taking center stage after more than 10 months.
During one of their regular mid-pitch conversations between overs, Suresh Raina, by accident, kicked his captain’s sacred weapon of mass destruction, his cricket bat. Raina, though, was quick to realize his mistake and immediately apologized with a heartwarming gesture, touching the bat first and later his forehead, as a mark of respect.
CSK's shot at the IPL 2020 trophy
Not having made any major changes to his squad, MS Dhoni and the Super Kings’ think tank seem to have a lot of faith in the side that made it to the Finals last season and went home with the title the season before. Despite the fact that most of the players that form CSK’s core squad are on the wrong side of thirty, the franchise has stuck with them, which appears to be quite an interesting move on their behalf. Will the move pay off and result in a whopping fourth title win for the Chennai Super Kings? Only time will tell.
