Worst captain in IPL – It’s fair to say that captains run the team. Captains play a major role in shaping a team’s structure and atmosphere. Not only does bowling or fielding change but the captain also plays a huge role when their team is down due to failures. It’s the responsibility of the skipper how to lift up his team and take them to new heights. Different captains have a different perspective in leading their side. While some lead from the front many through the tactical changes brought great laurels to the team. There’s no guarantee that a captain will be successful as over the years many big names have to lead the side but were not able to make an impact.

Over the years many players have captained IPL teams. Some big names who have had great international records as skippers failed to make an impact as a skipper in IPL.

  1. Kumar Sangakkara 

Kumar Sangakkara’s name in the list of worst captains in IPL might be surprising to you, considering his track record for Sri Lanka. The southpaw led Sri Lanka to the final of Cricket World Cup 2011.  He played IPL for Kings XI Punjab before shifting bases to Deccan Charges and then Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Sri Lanka legend captained 47 times in IPL and only managed 15 wins in those with a win percentage of just over 31%.

2. Mahela Jayawardene 

Sangakkara’s partner in crime Mahela Jayawardene is second on the list of worst captains in IPL. The right-hander batter despite having won the ICC captain of the year award and leading the Sri Lankan team to great heights failed to make an impact in IPL as a captain. He represented Kings XI Punjab Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Delhi Daredevils (now, Delhi Capitals) in IPL. But in 30 games as a skipper in the tournament, Jayawardene won only 10 games with a win percentage of 33.33%.

3. Sourav Ganguly 

One of the finest leaders in the game of cricket Sourav Ganguly is a surprising entrant in the list of worst captains in India. The southpaw took Indian cricket to new heights with his leadership skills and aggressive nature. But it wasn’t the same in the case when he led teams in IPL. The Bengal born batter captained Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors India in the marquee tournament and in a total of 42 matches he won only 17 as a skipper with a win percentage of just 40.48%.

4. George Bailey 

Australia’s George Bailey is the fourth-worst captain in the history of IPL. The right-hander played for King XI Punjab and also captained the side. Considering his track record for national side the franchise handed him the leadership role  but he failed to rise to the occasions. Even though he took Punjab Kings to the final of IPL 2014 but overall in 36 matches he managed to win only 16 matches with win percentage of 44.44%.

5. Rahul Dravid 

The wall of Indian cricket Rahul Dravid although played some masterful innings throughout his career but he failed to make impact with his leadership. His record leading Indian team is decent if you look at numbers but not as per the expectations. The former Indian skipper didn’t had a great in T20Is and one can clearly say that this wasn’t the format for him. He represented Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals in IPL and captained teams 48 times in the cash-rich league. In those matches he won only 22 times with a win percentage of 45.83%
