One of the most sought after all rounders in world cricket at the moment is Ben stokes from England. The gutsy all rounder has won world cup and an ashes game almost all by his own. The fact that both those things happened in the same year in 2019 makes it doubly special. He is also known as the one who makes things happen on the cricket field. Such is his aura.
Ben Stokes was first bought by Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017 who were one of the replacement teams for CSK and RR. He played under the captaincy of Steve Smith, the then Australian captain. He had a brilliant season that year. He scored 316 runs at a strike rate of 142 and picked 12 wickets with the ball at an economy rate of just above 7 in 2017.
Ben stokes is more of a batting all rounder in white ball cricket. His bowling in white ball has always been under the scanner and except for one good season with the ball in 2017, he has been below par with the ball in all other seasons. He has 920 runs in his IPL career so far at a strike rate of 134 and averages 25 runs per game after having played 43 IPL games.
The all rounder made a massive impact in his very first season in IPL with some majestic all round performances. He scored a century in the IPL 2017 for RPSG against Gujarat Lions chasing 163 runs. He remained unbeaten till the end with 103 runs off 63 balls.
His second century came in IPL 2020 against Mumbai Indians for his current franchise Rajasthan Royals. He once again remained unbeaten chasing 196. He smashed 107 off 60 balls including 14 fours and 3 maximums. There has been 2 Ben Stokes IPL 100 and both have ended in a winning cause.
The highest paid cricketer, Ben Stokes IPL auction in 2017 when he was picked by RPSG for a whopping 14.5 crore Indian rupees. Since the franchise was liquidated after that season, he came back into the auction table in 2018 only to fetch another handsome amount of 12.5 crore Indian rupees. This time he was pocketed by Rajasthan Royals for a two year period.
RR once again retained Ben Stokes in 2020 for $1.8M for another two year period which means Ben stokes will most likely be under the hammer in 2022 mega auction.
Ben Stokes is a natural six hitter. He has the power base and the range of shots to hit sixes at any stage of the game against any bowlers. The role he plays in T20s is something that requires range of shots against fast bowling to survive and he is gifted with those.
Ben Stokes bats at a high volatile position as far as T20s are concerned. He has always been seen as a middle order/finisher. Him being a left hand batter can be used as a weapon to counter spin but his problem is that he takes time to settle in his innings which goes against the role of a finisher.
Ben Stokes is an outright impact player in any format of the game. When he gets going, he makes sure that his team ends up on the winning side more often than not. There are very few bowlers in world cricket who can stop him when he is set. His highest score came against his favorite opposition Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020 for Rajasthan royals when he smashed his 2nd IPL century. He scored 107 off 60 balls in that innings and took his team home by remaining unbeaten till the end.
Ben stokes was signed by Rajasthan Royals in 2018 for 12.5 crores for a 2 year period. His contract came to an end after 2019 but Rajasthan Royals management decided to retain him for 12.5 crores for another 2 year period which comes to an end after IPL 2021. It will be interesting to see if RR retains him for another 2 year period.
Ben Stokes IPL team is Rajasthan Royals since 2018. He first represented Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017. That was his debut season in Indian Premier League. Since then he has represented only one other team in the world’s best league in IPL to date. Rajasthan Royals picked him in 2018 IPL auction and since then they haven’t released him so far. He is part of Rajasthan Royals at the moment.
Ben Stokes was seen as a finisher/middle order batter in T20s mainly because of his exploits as a middle order batsman in ODIs. The dynamics of an ODI finisher and an T20 finisher differ big time. Ben Stokes is someone who likes to take 10 balls to get his eye in which is affordable in ODIs but one cannot do that in T20s.
RR rightly changed the batting position of Ben Stokes and asked him to open the innings in IPL2020 where he was mighty impressive. The team management may follow this route going forward.
Ben Stokes IPL 2021 played just one solitary game in this edition of IPL and didn’t score even a run. He played the first game against Punjab Kings and then ruled out of the remainder of the season due to an injury as he went home for treatment. He took an indefinite break from cricket 2 months ago and missed out on the 2nd half of IPL. He scored a duck in the only game he played this season.
The dynamics of IPL is such that players who can contribute with both bat and ball will be in high demand amongst the franchise. Ben Stokes is one such player who earned the reputation of a match winning all rounder across formats. The fact that he had only one good season in IPL so far has been overlooked because of what he brings to the table.
Thats the only reason why he was retained by RR in 2020 for $1.8 for 2020 and 2021.
