And then there are some teams who hover in the middle but have a lot of promise. Well, as the 40+ games for most teams have concluded, we can make some observations about how things have worked out for them. So, let us talk about two Western Conference teams in Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets.

Lakers have 21 wins and 21 losses and for a team that has largely featured Westbrook and LeBron, that is surely a slim return. The team keeps getting outhustled, plays little to no defense at times, and lacks ways to keep the opposition off the rebounds. While their offense has panned out as predicted, the defense has been highly underwhelming, definitely among the worst in the league.

On the other Nuggets have depended upon Nikola Jokic to get their engines revving. Denver has a lot of inconsistent players but has figured out a team balance that helps them stay competitive. The team has usually begun strongly but sometimes plays some shoddy possessions during second halves. Can the Nuggets sort out their second-half issues?

Denver: They need to play harder in the second half
With Nikola Jokic in the middle, the Nuggets enter with a match-up at the Center position more often than not. He is a versatile scorer, one of the best rebounders and playmakers in the league. The Nuggets can run the offense through Jokic and his ability to find open teammates helps the Denver outfit to eke out quality offensive possessions. Meanwhile, Aaron Gordon, despite his up-and-down offense has created shots for himself and has had some big nights. Monte Morris and Facundo Campazzo are two dependable point guards while Will Barton when he plays can give all-around production. The Denver Nuggets have found some terrific production from Jeff Green who has shown the ability to spark the team with his high-flying dunks and some inspiring play on the offensive end. Yes, the Nuggets are not among the deepest teams in the league but they have played some wonderful basketball this month. However, as stated earlier, they run out of steam in the second half and that is one issue that needs to be fixed urgently.

Lakers: Ah, well…
What is most frustrating about the Lakers season has been that first, they got one of the easiest schedules to begin the season and lost to sub-par teams and then when they had some tough games, they were barely in the picture. And secondly, when they get a winning streak going, they lose in such gruesome fashion that it looks as if the team has run out of gas just after the first quarter. As someone who follows different teams’ fanbases I read some Lakers fans complaining about the lack of defense before the season began and also how the team lacks young legs, and how true were those fans! The Lakers have looked like one of the worst defensive teams all season long, they can’t stitch together even two decent defensive possessions at times and well, this has to be the worst defensive team that LeBron James must have featured for. Half of the season still remains, and is there any hope for the Lakers’ defense at this point! LeBron is dropping 30+ continuously and Monk has been on fire but where is the defense?
