HARITHA HARAM’S GREEN CHALLENGE
IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao’s ‘green challenge’ as part of Haritha Haram evoked a response from former Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, who accepted the Minister’s challenge and planted three saplings on Saturday.
Indian batting legends Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman on Saturday accepted this green challenge to plant saplings under Haritha Haram, the enormous plantation programme of Telangana government.
They Tweeted out pictures where they were seen planting saplings to spread awareness about the importance of trees around us.
WHAT’S THE INITIATIVE?
Rama Rao, son of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, had invited the former cricketers and other celebrities to plant the saplings, on Friday.
The fourth phase of Haritha Haram, the flagship programme of the state government, is scheduled to be launched from August 1. It aims at increasing the green cover in the state from the present 23% to 33% of the total geographical area.
The target was set to 230 crores but according to a statement from the minister’s office, only a total of 80 crore saplings have been planted.
US Consul General in Hyderabad, Katherine Hadda was also seen participating in Haritha Haram. She further nominated three celebrities including tennis star Sania Mirza.
Tendulkar did not spread the challenge forward but VVS further nominated Virender Sehwag, Mithali Raj and PV Sindhu to join in on the drive. Nehwal further nominated Bollywood celebrities Taapsee Pannu, Esha Gupta and Shraddha Kapoor.
