Charles was also a member of the West Indies squad which won the T20 World Cup twice in 2012 and 2016 respectively. Due to the heavy competition for slots in the West Indies limited-overs set-up, he has played most of his career as a backup opener.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was called up for national selection in the T20 series against England in 2011. It led to his selection in the 2012 T20 World Cup team, where he scored a match-winning 82 against England. Consistent performance in the subsequent Caribbean T20 tournament led to his selection in the ODI setup in 2012.
