An elegant right handed middle-order batsman, Md Azharuddin was born on 8 February 1963 in Hyderabad. After graduating from Nizam College, Osmania University, Azharuddin made his debut in test series against England in 1984 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

In his debut match, Azhar scored a century and went on to score two more centuries in next two games and became the only cricketer to score a century each in first three games.

In 1989, Azharuddin was handed the responsibilities of Indian team. He captained India in 47 test and 174 ODI games and led the team to victory in 90 ODIs. Azhar was also the first player to play in 300 ODIs.

Having played 99 tests, Azharuddin’s career dramatically came to end after his name was involved in the in-famous match fixing scandal in 2000. BCCI banned him for life.  In 2009, Azharuddin became a member of Parliament from Moradabad consittuency after getting a ticket from Indian National Congress.

In 2012, Andra Pradesh High Court lifted the ban on him describing the case as unsustainable.

  • His younger son Ayazuddin (19) was budding cricketer and succumbed to his injuries after being seriously injured in a motor cycle crash.
  • Reports suggest that Ayazuddin was riding brand new imported 1000 cc Suzuki GSX-R1000 at a speed more than 200 and lost control. The pillion rider was his cousin (Azhar’s sister’s son) Ajmal, who died on the spot. The motorbike was Eid gift from his father.
