SHEIKH ZAYAD STADIUM, ABU DHABI
South Africa thrashed Sri Lanka by a score-line of 3-0 in their last T20I series a couple of months ago. Temba Bavuma will lead the Proteas, who miss the likes of Faf du Plessis and Imran Tahir in their squad.
As for Afghanistan, they will be led by the experienced all-rounder, Gulbadin Naib. Rashid Khan will be Afghanistan’s trump card for the upcoming World Cup, as he is expected to trouble the batsman on a relatively spin-friendly UAE wickets. South Africa have a star-studded pace bowling lineup in the form of Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rababa.
The match will be broadcasted in over 100 countries around the globe. In India, the warm-up match will be broadcasted on the Star Sports Network. One can also stream the match live on Disney Hotstar. AFG vs SA Head to Head: The two teams have met twice in T20I matches so far. Both matches have gone in South Africa’s favor, as they lead the head to head record, 2-0.
AFG – 40%
SA – 60%
South Africa are the favorites to win the first warm-up game against Afghanistan, given their star-studded bowling lineup. The Proteas are a bit light in their batting department, with the absence of Faf du Plessis. On the other hand, Afghanistan also have a strong bowling order, which consists of the likes of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb ur Rahman. It will be interesting to see how the Protea batsman match up to the Afghani spinners.
Bet365: AFG: 3.00; SA: 1.40
Since this is a warm-up match, both teams will look to find their best combination. South Africa have had several players who have just returned from Indian Premier League (IPL). Afghanistan have not played International cricket in a while, and will look forward to regroup before the first match of the T20 World Cup.
Kagiso Rabada is a must have in your Dream11 side, given that he has a knack of picking up wickets in T20 cricket. He did not have a great IPL campaign, but he is expected to bounce back in the T20 World Cup.
Quinton de Kock will open the batting for South Africa, and he has amassed 1758 runs in 57 matches at an average of 37. The left-hander will play a key role in South Africa’s campaign at the T20 WC this year.
Rashid Khan had an impressive IPL campaign for Sunrisers Hyderabad, and will hope to spin his magic with the ball for Afghanistan. The leg-spinner was awarded as the last decade’s best T20I bowler.
The pitch is expected to favor the bowlers, given the slow nature of the tracks. The second half of the IPL witnessed low scores throughout the tournament, as the spinners benefited the most. It is tough for batsman to start slogging from ball one, as batters will need some time to set their eye in, before they start accelerating.
If SA bats first: 150-160
If AFG bats first: 120-130
The recently concluded IPL witnessed clear skies throughout the tournament, hence rain will not be an issue for the warm-up game. However, heat will be a major factor in UAE as there will be a lot of humidity around. Temperatures consistently remain above 30 degree Celsius in Abu Dhabi. The sun sets around 5:30-6 pm in the evening, and the weather starts cooling a bit from there on.
