After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, India captain Rohit Sharma gave the important news that Virat Kohli was not available for selection in this 1st ODI against England due to a slight niggle. Since yesterday, there have been a lot of news doing the rounds of Kohli possibly sustaining a groin strain during the third and final T20I encounter against England on Sunday.

“We are going to bowl first. There is some grass cover and it’s overcast as well. I guess sun will be out in sometime. We want to have a score in front of us. Shami, Bumrah – those guys can swing the ball. It’s important to take wickets upfront and put brakes on the scoring. We understand the importance of playing overseas, we want to do well outside India. Today is no different. We have five batters, two all-rounders. Kohli is not playing this game, Shreyas will bat at 3,” said India skipper Rohit Sharma during the toss. However, Virat is very much present at the Kennington Oval in London with the rest of the teammates but was not seen warming up before the game.

“Virat has a groin strain during last game. It can’t be confirmed whether it happened during fielding or while batting. He will probably miss first ODI tomorrow at Oval as the groin needs rest,” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma mentioned at the toss that Shreyas Iyer will bat at the No.3 position in the absence of Virat Kohli. Also, right-arm pacer Prasidh Krishna is part of the India playing XI as the third frontline seamer alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.
