Highest score in ODI – It took 39 years and 2,961 games for ODI cricket to witness the first ever double hundred by an individual batter which Sachin Tendulkar achieved in 2010 against South Africa when he played a breathtaking innings of 200* from 147 balls.
Since first double hundred in ODI, there have been seven more instances of the 200-run mark being breached and it’s only gonna increase rapidly from here with the batter-friendly pitches, fielding restrictions favouring batters and the usage of two new balls.
Eight of the top ten highest ODI scores have come in the last decade or so which shows the improvement in batting conditions and also the skill level of the current batters in terms of the power game. Now let’s take a look at the highest individual scores in ODIs.
Highest Score | Balls | Player | Year |
264 | 173 | Rohit Sharma | 2014 |
237* | 163 | Martin Guptill | 2015 |
219 | 149 | Virender Sehwag | 2011 |
215 | 147 | Chris Gayle | 2015 |
210* | 156 | Fakhar Zaman | 2018 |
It was the first international game for Rohit Sharma after his recovery from a fractured finger in 2014. He started slow understandably scoring his first fifty in 72 balls but there was no looking back after that as he got to his hundred in 100 balls and notched up his double hundred in just 151 balls. He finally finished the innings at 264 runs from 173 balls, the highest score ever by an individual batter in ODIs.
If Rohit’s 264 is the highest ever individual ODI score, then Martin Guptill‘s 237* is the highest ever individual score in ODI World Cup history. The best thing about this knock was it came in the quarter-final of the 2015 World Cup which New Zealand won comfortably by 143 runs. They would soon beat South Africa in the semis to reach their first ever finals in WC history.

When Sachin reached the 200 run mark in 2010, there were discussions on who would be the next batter to beat the record. Many names were discussed and the main one among them was Virender Sehwag. He rightfully broke the record a year after he notched up 219 runs from 149 balls against the West Indies which is also the highest ever ODI score by a captain.
A powerful, attacking batter Chris Gayle was always expected to breach the 200 run mark in ODIs and when he did it against Zimbabwe in the 2015 World Cup it came as no surprise. It was the first ever double hundred in a World Cup game.
