Three England players namely Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes and Dawid Malan have withdrawn from the 2nd leg of IPL which is scheduled to resume from 19th of September.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have already named a replacement for Jonny Bairstow in Sherfane Rutherford. Meanwhile, KL Rahul led Punjab Kings have signed Aiden Markram in place of Dawid Malan.
Delhi Capitals are in the #1 position in the points table after first 8 games of the season. They have won 6 and lost 2 so far. They are 2 wins away from qualifying for the playoffs for 3rd consecutive season.
With Chris Woakes pulling out of the IPL, DC have signed the Sydney Sixers left arm pacer in Ben Dwarshius who is a like for like replacement according to DC. The left arm seamer also bowls majority of his overs in the powerplay and is handy with the bat. There is no doubt that he is a downgrade to Chris Woakes and DC could have scouted better in signing a replacement for the Englishman instead of another BBL product.
We have seen in the past that players who have had stellar record in BBL have failed in IPL, such is the gulf between the 2 leagues. DC will have the services of Shreyas Iyer who will comeback into the side after missing the first leg due to injury. This would mean DC will be back to their 2020 combination where they fielded Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje in the playing 11 as their overseas players.
DC were the runners-up in the 2020 season. They lost to Mumbai Indians in a fairly one sided contest. They were defeated by Chennai Super Kings in 2019 season in the qualifer 2. One has to wait and see if they are 3rd time lucky in this season. It wont be an easy task to lift the trophy by overcoming 2 giants in MI and CSK. DC will need 2 of their South African pacemen to be at the top of their game to beat MI and CSK.
