ICC have released the draft for the future tour programme that includes the all important World Test Championship cycle for 2023-2025. New Zealand are the defending WTC champions after beating India in the finals of the inaugural edition of WTC in 2021.

WTC 2023-2025: India face stiff overseas challenge

India are scheduled to tour to Australia for a whopping five match test series in the next WTC cycle. Though they have won the last 2 tours to Australia quite dramatically and made history. It will be a different challenge altogether as they will be going in with almost a transitioned side. With Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane already been overlooked in the test side as the first choice players, there is no certainty over Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s availability as well as they will be up against the talks of retirement.

They will also be touring to South Africa where they have never won a series in the history of test cricket. They had a golden opportunity to win the series last time around earlier this year but due to some sloppy cricket by Indians coupled with some extraordinary cricket by South Africa saw them lose the series 2-1 after being 1-nil up in the series.

Their third overseas assignment will be against West Indies where India have a fairly good record in the last 20 years.

As far as home series are concerned, they will be hosting England, New Zealand and Bangladesh which shouldn’t be much of a worry for them where they will be looking to pocket full points.

Can India make the final of current WTC?

India are not in a great position with respect to the current WTC points table. They have 6 games remaining in the current cycle, 4 against Australia at home and 2 against Bangladesh in Bangladesh. They need to win all the six games to qualify for the finals which looks impossible at the moment.
