Not a lot of people knew about the Tamil Nadu cricketer, Shah Rukh Khan until Punjab Kings bought his services at the IPL 2021 Auctions, conducted on 18th February 2021. He grabbed headlines after being roped in by Punjab Kings at a whopping amount of 5.25 crores.

Some of the ardent cricket fans had anticipated it much earlier because of his stupendous show for his state team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021. Shah Rukh Khan played an instrumental role in helping Tamil Nadu win the SMAT 2021. Batting lower down the order, he played several notable cameos for his side.

He was born on 27th May, 1995 and hails from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. The 25-year-old comes from a cricketing background. His father too was a cricketer, while his young brother has also played several leagues in the state.

He did his schooling from the Don Bosco School and St. Bede’s school. Both the schools have a history of producing some world-class cricketing talents. Impressive performances in the age-group helped him rise through the ranks pretty quickly.

He first grabbed the eyeballs after impressing in the inaugural tournament organized by the Chennai Super Kings in 2012. The Tamil Nadu cricketer was adjudged as the all-rounder of the tournament.

Shah Rukh continued his fine form and impressed in the following coach Behar Trophy. In 8 innings, he amassed 624 runs and picked 8 wickets. However, despite exhibiting top-notch performances, he wasn’t picked in India’s squad for the 2014 Under-19 World Cup.

Nevertheless, he was included in Tamil Nadu’s state team in both T20 and limited over’s side. At 18 years of age, the cricketer made his T20 and List A debut for the Tamil Nadu state team. He, however, had to wait for 4 long years to make his first-class cricket debut.

He has been a consistent performer for his state for a few years now. The 25-year-old was invited for trials by Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2020. However, he failed to impress the management. He didn’t get a buyer last season. A prolific season with the bat in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has helped him fetch a contract this year.
