IPL 2021

The Indian Premier League is an extravaganza which is always looked forward to by fans in India and all over the world. The 8-team tournament involves teams competing amongst themselves to be crowned the king of the Indian Domestic competition. The tournament which began in 2008 has assumed cult status since then with T20 format games that never fail to entertain and enthrall fans alike.

The most impressive thing about the IPL is the fact that it doesn’t just involve the quintessential cricket fans but also the fans which are not regular cricket watchers. The IPL is almost like a mega festival which marries entertainment and sports. This is the tournament which has over the years paved the way for franchise cricket in the world. This tournament has captured the imagination of fans and experts alike as the quality of cricket has been top notch. The teams in themselves have assumed entities and fandom and the fan following can compete with the following that the football leagues all around the world receive.

As a product and as a brand it has seen an evolution from where it was an experiment to the point where there are cricketers who have become specialists for the IPL. It has broken crowds for stadium attendance along with the viewership records too. However, with the pandemic affecting all our lives for the worse, there has been an affect on the IPL too

The 2020 edition of the IPL could not be held in the months of April and May and had to be held later in the year in UAE which has over the years become a home away from home for the IPL. The IPL in 2021 was supposed to be held in India and was held as the cases had significantly reduced in India, but the cases started rising again after the second wave hit India hard. The IPL did not remain unaffected either and there were players who caught the virus which led to the IPL being postponed midway. The good news though is that the IPL is set to resume soon and there is going to be a conclusion to the IPL with resumption likely for the month of September. The matches are going to take place in UAE and it is going to be seeing a conclusion to the tournament which was played partly in India. There are 31 games which are still to be played in the IPL and it is anyone’s game considering the format of the IPL. The points table format is explained in depth below.

IPL Team Rankings & Performances 2021

The tournament thus far has all been about three teams and their dominance over proceedings. The first of these teams is the Delhi Capitals team which had a jolt even before the tournament began with their skipper Shreyas  Iyer being unavailable due to injury. This however was not a problem for them as the man of the moment of Indian Cricket took over. Rishabh Pant proved to be captain fantastic for them and has seen his team win 6 out of 8 games in the tournament. With Ricky Ponting handling affairs as the coach, you can be sure he is planning the resumption of the tournament in UAE keeping the pitches in mind. They were finalists last year which was also held in the UAE too. They performed well and would not be complaining about the change of Venue.

Chennai Super Kings

One team which did not doo well in the tournament last year was Chennai Super Kings as they had a rare off year. They came roaring back as you would expect them to with the likes of Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Faf Du Plessis and Rituraj Gaekwad looking at the top of their game. They also had their usual suspects in the form of Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina and off course we have seen their leader MS Dhoni take the forefront. They would be slightly concerned about the UAE leg as they have historically not done well in the tournaments held there.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Sunrisers Hyderabad have struggled in the tournament so far. This is an issue for them as they have only won a solitary game out of 7 and it is a hard place to recover from. With 7 games left to play, every game virtually becomes a must win for them. there is an issue with respect to an out of form David Warner which caused them to shift the captaincy to Kane Williamson who would be on a high after lifting the World test championship

Royal Challengers Bangalore

The Royal Challengers Bangalore team were not up to their usual antics of being underperformers. They were doing really well in the tournament till it stopped and would be gutted after their momentum got stalled in the tournament. They would however be confident of the overall tournament after they played well in the last year’s tournament. This is going to be another chance for them to get the albatross of their neck with a win in this tournament.

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have been their usual self having not started at their best infact the current position of 4th is actually something they would prefer being in because they have seen seasons where they have delivered in the must win situations. This is going to be a chance for them to win a staggering 6th time. They won in UAE too so they would be confident of not being affected by the change in venue too.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders have not benefited from the change in captaincy and their inspirational world cup winning skipper, Eoin Morgan has struggled not just with the bat but also as a leader about getting the combination right. However if we know one thing about champion players, it’s the fact that they always come back really strong and that is what he will be looking to do now.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals have done what they always do, they have unveiled some very exciting players in the tournament. The one player which has caught the eye of national selectors has been Chetan Sakariya. He impressed with the variations that he had. They would also be looking at Chris Morris to deliver the goods right here and be counted in important games being one of the most expensive buys and has delivered in a few games whereas failed in a few. They have their captain Sanju Samson doing well too

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings have not been at their best but have not been at their worst either. It seems that KL Rahul has been galvanizing this side as a team that will fight really hard to win till the end. They need to find a better bowling performance from somewhere and be consistent with it as they go into the deeper end of the tournament.

Rules For Allocating Points in IPL

  • The team that wins a game is allotted 2 games for this win.
  • The team that loses a game is not allotted any points
  • In the situation of a tied game, both the teams are supposed to play a super over. The winner of the super over is deemed to be the winner of the game.
  • In case of a game that is not played due to a reason of rain or abandoned for any other reason will see the points divided equally between the two teams.

The qualification rules are as follows

  • The teams that finish top 4 in the tournament in terms of most points earned qualify for the qualifiers
  • In an event of teams having equal points earned in the tournament, the qualification will be dependant on the Net Run Rate.
  • The calculation of the net run rate is done by the formula – Average runs scored by a team in an over – Average runs scored against a team in an over, through the course of the tournament.
  • In an event of the net run rate being same, which is an extremely rare situation, the number of wickets which are taken by the team is considered.

The rules have often led to situations at the end of the group stages where teams have been required to chase down certain runs in certain overs or restrict teams to a certain total. It all just adds to the drama that the VIVO IPL is.

IPL 2021 Top 3 Ranking

As of now, the top 3 teams in the IPL 2021 have been Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

While all the top 4 teams qualify for the qualifier stages, the teams which finish in the top 2 slots get a chance to redeem themselves in the qualifier stages. The format of the Qualifiers is explained below

  • The top two teams in the group stages go on to face in the qualifier. The team that wins the qualifier goes straight into the finals
  • The third and the 4th placed team in the tournament face off in the eliminator. The team that loses the eliminator goes straight out of the tournament.
  • The winner of the eliminator and the loser of the qualifier have to face off to decide the team that faces the winner of the qualifier in the finals.
  • The finals are played as a one off game which decides the winner of the tournament.

The teams in this tournament which are in pole position right now are Delhi and Chennai but we do know the prowess that Mumbai has in the later parts of the tournament. They will be looking to get back to the reckoning in the top 2 teams.

FAQs

What is the qualifying points in IPL 2021?

While there is no such number of points which are required to be scored in order to qualifier for the later rounds in the IPL, there can be a number where teams feel secure about their qualification. There are 8 teams in the competition and it is supposed to play a game home and away. The home and away games however happen during normal circumstances however this is going to be unusual when the teams are played in restricted stadiums. The teams therefore play 14 games and usually if they end up winning 7 out of their games and score 14 points, they are most likely in contention for the top 4 spots. This is however not a guarantee as the teams might be tied at those points. So in this tournament with 7 games left for a team like Sunrisers Hyderabad,  they have won 2 points so far and are required to win 6 out of their 7 games to reach the 14 point mark. This is not a situation they would like to be in however it still leaves them with a mathematical chance. We have earlier seen teams like Mumbai Indians win the tournament after being down and out. These are some of the most inspirational stories when they come from behind and get back into teams winning the tournament or qualifying for the qualifiers. With 6 wins already in the tournament, the Delhi Capitals team is right now definitely well on their way to qualifying for the tournament qualifiers.

Who is the winner of IPL 2021?

While in a normal season, the winner of the IPL would have been declared in and around the end of the month of May, this year we haven’t seen the winner yet. The reason for that was the onset of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in India. With this the IPL was postponed on 2nd of May and for long, there was no assurance about whether the IPL would resume again or not. The BCCI however has struck a deal with the UAE to host the IPL there in the month of September. This is going to be exciting as UAE has often offered some really close games. This year it will be interesting to see if we see a new winner or a familiar title holder winning it again. As the Indian Premier league 2021 points table stands though, Delhi go in with the most advantageous position.

Who is at the top of the IPL 2021?

When the tournament paused due to the COVID pandemic in the month of May, it was Delhi capitals who had been at the top of the pile with 6 wins so far out of the 8 games.

Their results have been as follows

Date Opponent Result

10th April 2021

Chennai Super Kings

15th April 2021

Rajasthan Royals

18th April 2021

Punjab Kings

20th April 2021

The franchise has certainly done very well in the tournament and being a franchise that has often underachieved in this tournament, we have seen a turnaround in the last couple of years. It would be interesting to see whether they can continue on and win in the tournament.

What is the points of IPL 2021?

The IPL 2021 is an unusual tournament and a one of a kind one where the IPL is going to be conducted across two phases. As of now 29 games have been played and with 27 games still left in the group stage, there is a potential 14 points up for grabs for every team except Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. Both of these teams have played 8 games each and have 6 games to play. This leaves them with a total of 12 points up for grabs. While the Delhi Capitals are in a reasonably comfortable position as of now, their counterparts in the last game have a lot for themselves to do. The Punjab Kings have won only 3 out of their 8 games and from here on in, every loss that they suffer will be like a nail in the coffin of their season. This is the time they need to step up and retrieve the situation for themselves. Same goes for teams like Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals who would feel they have a lot to do to fight for the coveted 4th spot. Royal Challengers Bangalore should be comfortable and fight instead for the Number 2 spot to assure their position in the qualifier.

Indian Premier League

Which IPL Team is best in 2021?

As of now, the Delhi Capitals has been the best team in the IPL followed by Chennai Super Kings. However, it is difficult to predict a winner midway into the tournament, this would be even more evident in this particular IPL as it is going to be held in a different country altogether. This is going to be a real test for the teams to adjust to different conditions. Consistency is an important virtue in the IPL while it isn’t exactly the most important virtue. There are teams which are often consistent and finish 1st in the IPL table but do not do well in the finals. It is the team that holds its nerve in the final stages that wins the tournament. This year while the top 4 has two of the usual suspects in CSK and MI, there is RCB and DC which can spring up a surprise. Other teams might still be in contention right now.

While the dates for the IPL have not been finalised yet, it is going to be held sometime around the September and October period. This will give an opportunity to many players to stake their claim for the T20 world cup which follows the tournament. It will be interesting to see if a player who hasn’t yet been considered or those who are currently out of favour. The teams and franchises will on the other hand like to go deep into the tournament and stay in contention. The conditions in UAE will cause some disruption to the plans that the teams would have had while choosing their squads as it was scheduled to be India. It is the team that adapts best in the coming tournament that will be doing better in the tournament. The points table while significant isn’t conclusive so far. Going further in the tournament, we can still see a massive turnaround happening soon and the IPL 2021 points table could still have many changes.
