Shikhar Dhawan had it all that it takes to be a successful international cricketer, from a left-hander’s elegance, to drives which are pleasing to the eye and an attacking mindset. It took him some time to be a regular in India’s eleven, the reason being India having a no. of world-class openers like Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. Dhawan waited for his opportunity patiently and kept on performing heavily in the domestic tournaments. Dhawan scored runs heavily right from his Under-19 days. He was the highest run-scorer of the 2004 U-19 World Cup in which he scored 505 runs at an average of 84 and was chosen the ‘Player of the Tournament’. He scored 187 against Australia on his Test debut which was the fastest Test century by a debutant in this format. But it was ODI cricket in which Dhawan blossomed. He took his time in the initial overs and then goes on to play a big innings more often than not.
Shikhar Dhawan’s technique and style of play were suited to ODI format and that’s the reason he has been India’s mainstay in this format. His run-scoring in ICC tournaments is unmatched. Dhawan was the highest run-getter in 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy. He was India’s highest run-scorer in 2015 World Cup. He plays IPL for Delhi Capitals and is a prolific run-scorer for the franchise.
