Dona Roy, popularly known as Dona Ganguly, is an Indian Bengali Odissi Dancer. She is the wife of former Indian cricketer and 39th president of Board of Control for Cricket in India, Sourav Ganguly. Hailing from an affluent business family from Kolkata, Dona was born on the 22nd of August, 1972, and was the only child of her father Sanjeev Roy, and mother Swapna Roy. She began dancing at the age of three and in no time her passion for dancing turned into devotion. She went to Loreto Convent School.
Later, when Dona shifted Odissa, she learned dancing under the guidance of Guru Giridhari Nayek. She felt magic and happiness while performing classical dance. She considers one of the turning points in her life when she started developing skills under KELUCHARAN MOHAPATRA. Mohapatra accompanied her many times with Pakhavaj and that is when she realized her real talent.
DOVER LAKE MUSIC CONFERENCE, UDAY SHANKAR DANCE FESTIVAL, RIVER FESTIVAL, and ANTIQUITY were few of the shows in Kolkata where Dona showcased her talent. Not only this, Dona represented herself all over India in shows like the Konark Festival in Konark, Barak Utsav in Assam, Dakshin Mukambi National Festival in Kerala and tons of other prestigious events. Her talent had no boundaries overseas as well. China invited Dona in one of their most popular festivals WORLD EXPO in the year 2010. When her success was touching the sky, Dona thought of opening her own dance school. Her Diksha Manjari dance school was inaugurated by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar that has the capacity of more than 2000 students at a time.
Dona and Sourav Ganguly share a daring love story that could have become a blockbuster movie. The duo used to live next door to each other since childhood and slowly they fell in love. Sourav was always present at all of Dona’s dance performances and she was always there in all his matches. However, their parents were against the relationship and in turn, the couple had to run and got married in a secret wedding. When the secret was revealed in their families, they were upset for a while but they eventually gave up and held a formal wedding.
The adorable couple was blessed with a baby girl, and they named their daughter Sana.
